Milwaukee Wave News Release
ST. LOUIS - In front of 13,789 fans at the Savvis Center in St. Louis, Missouri, the Milwaukee Wave extended its winning streak to three by beating the Steamers, 7-3. With less than one minute left in the match, St. Louis' Lindsay Kennedy made her professional debut as the first female player in the Major Indoor Soccer League and Milwaukee's Marcelo Fontana challenged her, scoring the last goal for the Wave. Goalkeeper Nick Vorberg also had an impressive evening, allowing no goals after the first quarter.
St. Louis started the game with a quick goal past Milwaukee's keeper Nick Vorberg, by Shaun David (1:12) as assisted by player/coach Daryl Doran. Coming off the power play, Doran scored the Steamers' second goal of the night, off the assist from teammate Joe Reiniger. Milwaukee got on the board at 9:10 in the first quarter as Matt Schmidt found Giuliano Oliviero for the Wave's first goal of the contest. Nearly a minute later (10:06), Reiniger took a pass from Doran to add another goal to the Steamers' lead; however, the Wave's Greg Howes took a pass from Johnny Torres to answer back at (10:41) for the goal. Semir Mesanovic then scored his fifth goal of the season to tie the Steamers at 11:57 of the game.
Going into the second quarter tied-up at three, St. Louis's Sterling Wescott and Mariano Bollella came back into the game after both received a yellow card for misconduct in the first period. Milwaukee's Chris Morman chipped in a power play goal, off the assist by Oliviero at 5:38, for the Wave's third unanswered goal of the evening past the Steamers' goalkeeper Brett Phillips. The only goal of the second period gave the Wave the lead at 4-3.
After a scoreless third quarter, the final period of the match opened at 5:56 as Howes converted a long blast past Phillips, off Oliviero's second assist of the evening. St. Louis's Jeff DiMaria entered as the 6th attacker late in the game, and Milwaukee capitalized on this opportunity when co-captain Michael King converted for a long goal at 13:09. Marcelo Fontana also took advantage of this situation shortly after Steamers' Lindsay Kennedy made her MISL debut. Fontana (14:10) took the ball from Kennedy to score the last goal on the open net.
