Chicago Storm News Release

Chicago (Friday, February 18, 2005) – The Chicago Storm picked up their sixth straight victory with a win over the St. Louis Steamers tonight at the UIC Pavilion. The Storm improved their record to 12-12 in the MISL and remained in fourth-place as St. Louis fell to 15-11, which is good for second. "Yellow and Black" goalkeeper Danny Waltman picked up his 12th win of the season, making 15 saves on 16 shots faced in the contest to preserve the win and the lone goal came with only 1:56 remaining in the game. Storm midfielder/defender Lazo Alavanja extended his point-scoring streak to five games after picking up his eight goal of the season at the 4:36 mark in the third quarter.

"This was our best performance of the season," said Storm Head Coach Frank Klopas. "I have said that after a few games lately, but the team just keeps improving. Danny was unbelievable tonight. I do not know how he makes some of these saves. We really wanted to get the shutout for him. They guys were working hard to get it for him. We were a little disappointed that we did not get it, but we won the game and are playing great soccer. Our offense continues to capitalize on our opportunities and the defense has been great. St. Louis is a very good team, so I am very proud of our guys tonight. They did not let up as they would in the past."

The Storm attacked the Steamers early and got on the scoreboard first at 3:39 of the first quarter on a goal by Mark Ughy. Chicago compounded St. Louis' woes when Novi scored less than a minute later to make it 2-0 in favor of the "Yellow and Black." Defender Fred DeGand then tallied his first goal for the Storm at 5:56 of the first quarter to stun the Steamers and give Chicago a 3-0 lead.

Chicago took the advantage into halftime and then added to the total with two more goals in the third quarter. Midfielder Lazo Alavanja and Ughy added the goals as the Storm began to pull away from St. Louis. Alavanja's tally tied a team mark for the longest point-scoring streak as the Crown Point, Indiana native has reached five straight games with a point. The mark was set by Storm forward Byron Alvarez to start the season and was matched by Nino DaSilva. DaSilva's point-scoring streak came to an end tonight. Waltman continued to stymie the St. Louis offense as he compiled 10 saves throughout the first three quarters.

Andy Rosenband, Novi, and DeGand scored for Chicago in the fourth stanza as they took an insurmountable 8-0 lead. The Storm defense continued to shutdown a high-scoring St. Louis team and Waltman made five more saves in the fourth quarter until the Steamers' Jeff Davis scored late in the game to make it 8-1 for the Storm.
