Milwaukee Mustangs News Release
MILWAUKEE (May 30, 2012) - The Arena Football League schedule doesn't get any easier for Milwaukee when the Mustangs (3-7) host San Jose at 7 p.m. at the BMO Harris Bradley Center on Saturday night.
The SaberCats have a gaudy 8-3 record and sit on top of the West Division of the National Conference. San Jose has won five of its last six games, largely because SaberCats quarterback Mark Grieb has been solid. The savvy AFL veteran is coming off of an outstanding performance against Chicago when he carved up the Rush defense for 417 yards and nine touchdowns. Grieb averages 315 passing yards a game.
The explosive San Jose offense averages nearly 67 points a game, which is good for third in the league. The SaberCats will likely have much more than football on their minds when they travel to Milwaukee. San Jose is mourning the loss of fullback Johnie Kirton, who passed away on Tuesday morning.
"It is with great shock and sadness that we confirm that Johnie Kirton has passed away," said SaberCats coach Darren Arbet, in a team statement this week. "He was such a great kid, and in the short time he was in San Jose he was such a valued member of our organization's family. Johnie was a great team guy and hard-nosed player, and he will be sorely missed. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Johnie's family in this difficult time."
To honor the 26-year-old Kirton, the SaberCats will wear stickers with the number 37 on their helmets. Kirton played three seasons in the AFL with the Chicago Rush, Arizona Rattlers, and the SaberCats.
Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. at the BMO Harris Bradley Center on Saturday, June 2 and can be heard on 540 ESPN and Espnwisconsin.com with play-by-play announcer Bill Johnson. Live broadcast of the game will can be seen on Time Warner Cable Sports32.
