Milwaukee Wave News Release
PHILADELPHIA (February 16, 2005) â The Milwaukee Wave converted six unanswered goals to defeat the Philadelphia KiXX 6-2 at the Wachovia Spectrum, in front of 9,872 fans, on Wednesday morning in the KiXX's 10th Annual School Day Game. Philadelphia took an early two-goal lead, but the Wave defense held strong for the remainder of the contest, behind a strong effort from goalkeeper Nick Vorberg. Milwaukee's offensive attack was led by forward Greg Howes with one goal and three assists for four points and Matt Schmidt, who tallied two goals and an assist in the win. The Wave establishes winning streak at two games and improves the team record to 13-10.
The Philadelphia KiXX got on the board first in the contest as player/coach Don D'Ambra found Goran Vasic (13:53) off the restart goal late in the opening period. Chris Morman had been sent to the box at 12:06 for holding and Vasic was able to capitalize on the man advantage.
The KiXX increased its lead early in the second period with a goal by D'Ambra (0:50) off the assist from Drew Kopp. Milwaukee was able to get on the board when Peter Pappas came out high, giving Wave midfielder Matt Schmidt the opportunity to dribble past the KiXX keeper to convert for the score at 2:56, off the assist from Greg Howes. Two minutes later the Wave tied things up at 2-2 with a power-play goal by Giuliano Oliviero, who took the pass from Howes.
The Wave collected its third unanswered goal (and its third goal in six minutes), as Howes tallied his third assist when he found Pat White on the low post for the score at 6:08 to take the lead at 3-2.
The Wave increased its lead early in the third period as Michael King (1:20) headed in a long pass from teammate Chris Morman. The Wave defense held the KiXX scoreless in the period, with King's goal giving the Wave a 4-2 lead heading into the final stanza.
KiXX defender Jeremy Aldrich was called for a two-minute elbowing penalty at 5:02 of the fourth period. Aldrich contested the call and was issued a red card for misconduct, resulting in an automatic ejection. Philadelphia inserted D'Ambra as the sixth attacker and Howes was able to convert the empty net goal at 13:14. Schmidt assisted Howes and then tallied his second goal of the contest 46 seconds later, as he sent a long ball from midfield into the back of the net. The Wave hailed as the victor in today's match versus the league's leader.
The Wave travels to St. Louis on Saturday, February 19 to take on the St. Louis Steamers at 7 p.m. before returning home on Sunday, February 20 to compete against rival Chicago Storm.
