Richmond Kickers News Release
RICHMOND, VA â (Wednesday, June 16, 2004) â The Richmond Kickers (6-3-3, 21 points) take on their lone Western Conference foe, the Milwaukee Wave United (1-5-1, 4 points) this Saturday, June 19th at 7:00 p.m. at the University of Richmond Stadium. The first 500 fans will receive a water bottle courtesy of RISE. Richmond last met Milwaukee in the 2002 A-League championship finals on September 28, 2002, where the Kickers were defeated in overtime.
The Kickers shutout the Charleston Battery last weekend while the Milwaukee Wave United suffered a loss to the Seattle Sounders. Milwaukee will travel to Virginia Beach on Friday, prior to the Kickers match on Saturday.
"It is always extraordinary to defeat Charleston, one of our most fierce rivals," comments Richmond Kickers head coach Leigh Cowlishaw. "It is vital that we do not lose focus this weekend against Milwaukee and stay with the five teams that are breaking away from the pack."
2004 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup
The Kickers opponent for the third round of the 2004 U.S. Open Cup was decided last night when the Cape Cod Crusaders defeated the Western Massachusetts Pioneers. The Kickers will host Cape Cod on Wednesday, June 30th at 7:00 p.m. at Sports Backers Stadium in Richmond, VA. Cape Cod is the defending 2003 Premier Development League (PDL) champion and is currently leading the Northeast Division of the PDL with a record of 6-2-0, 18 points.
"We are fortunate to be able to play at home, but Cape Cod will be a difficult opponent as they are an organization that is accustomed to winning," comments Cowlishaw. "It will be the most important game of the season as the winner will get to play against a team from Major League Soccer in the next round of the Open Cup."
Dating back to 1914, the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup is the oldest cup competition in United States soccer and is among the oldest in the world. Open to all affiliated amateur and professional teams in the United States, it is the domestic cup competition that gives any affiliated team in the United States a chance at winning the title of "United States Cup Champions." The Kickers were crowned the U.S. Open Cup Champions in 1995 (prior to the inception of Major League Soccer).
