PORTLAND, Ore. - Following Thursday's six-goal outburst against Edmonton, the Timbers failed to score a goal for the first time all season, losing 1-0 in overtime to Vancouver on Saturday. The Timbers attempt to rebound from the loss with a match against the Rochester Raging Rhinos (7-2-1, 22pts) Thursday evening at PGE Park at 7 p.m.
TIMBERS VS. ROCHESTER - THURSDAY, 7 p.m.
The Raging Rhinos make their first-ever visit to the Rose City Thursday, matching up two of the top A-League teams from their respective conferences. The Rhinos have a 2-1-1 record on the road this season, collecting both wins from the Puerto Rico Islanders. Rochester won the only meeting between the two sides, 1-0 on August 5, 2001.
TOP SCORERS
Thursday's match will feature two of the league's most potent scoring threats in Alan Gordon and Rochester's Corey Woolfolk. Gordon ranks first in A-League scoring with 21 points on 10 goals and one assist, while Woolfolk sits in third place with 15 points on seven goals and an assist.
LOCAL RHINOS OUT OF COMMISSION
Portland-area native Ian Fuller will be held out of action Thursday ... the Tualatin High School graduate finished the 2003 season second in point total and goals scored for Rochester ... former Timber Noah Delgado will also miss Thursday's game with an injury ... Delgado appeared in five games with the Timbers in 2002.
THE RETURN OF FADI
Former Timbers striker Fadi Afash will meet his old team on June 30 when the Timbers take on the Utah Blitzz in the U.S. Open Cup. Afash leads the Blitzz with four goals on the year after being released by the Timbers in training camp.
OUT AND ABOUT
Timbers Aaron Heinzen and Jarrod Weis made a trip to Ben Franklin Elementary School in Vancouver, Wash., Monday, visiting with students, signing autographs and teaching soccer tricks to kids in a school-wide assembly ... the Timbers will be making an in-store appearance at the Gateway Fred Meyer this Saturday from 1:30-2:30 p.m. to visit with fans and sign autographs.
ON THE MEND
Midfielder Hugo Alcaraz-Cuellar will be a game-time decision after experiencing tendonitis ... defender Shawn Saunders will be held out of action with a right hamstring injury suffered at Charleston ... midfielder Memo Arzate will not play with a sprained right knee.
TIMBERS ON THE TUBE
The Rochester match will be broadcast live on Comcast Cable Channel 14, available to Comcast subscribers in the Portland metro area, Salem and Washington's Clark County. Veteran broadcaster Bob Akamian and former University of Portland soccer standout Jimmy Clarke will call the action Thursday.
RADIO WAVES
Thursday's match will be aired live on KZNY AM-1010 at 7 p.m. with Andy McNamara calling the play-by-play. Arnulfo Alvarez will call the game in Spanish on KRMZ AM-1150. The Timbers can also be heard live on the Internet at OregonLive.com.
