Miller Opens Season in Style

Starting the 2011 campaign the Calgary Vipers defeated the Yuma Scorpions 9-5 in the first half of a double-header featuring two seven inning games at Desert Sun Stadium in Yuma, Arizona. Medicine Hat's Drew Miller wasted little time hitting his first home run of the season as part of a three hit, two run, and three run batted in night. After taking the lead in the first inning Calgary gave up the advantage in the third inning with four runs against but responded with four runs of their own in the fourth frame to go ahead for good.

Catcher Justin Tellam also had a big night with the bat with three runs batted in while Calgary resident Aaron Dunsmore collected two hits, one run, and one RBI in his professional debut.

On the mound Manny Ayala (1-0) recorded the win with five strikeouts in five innings while J.J. Whetsel (1) picked up the save with two scoreless innings pitched.

Calgary grabbed the lead in the top of the first inning as Jonny Kaplan walked, Jimmy Rohan drove in a run with a fielder's choice, and Drew Miller doubled in another run for a 2-0 lead.

Yuma cut the lead in half in the bottom of the second when J.J. Muse doubled and Gabriel Ortiz tripled for a 2-1 score.

The Scorpions took the lead in the third frame as Carlos Leon walked, Ray Stokes singled, Jose Canseco walked to load the bases, Leon scored on a wild pitch, Ozzie Canseco doubled in two runs, and Juan Camacho singled in one for a 5-2 advantage.

The Vipers responded with a four-run frame of their own in the next half inning as Miller singled, Kevin Price walked, Calgary resident Aaron Dunsmore doubled in a run, Justin Tellam singled in two, Kaplan singled, Wilver Perez walked to load the bases, and Rohan plated the go-ahead run with a groundout and 6-5 lead.

In the top of the seventh inning Calgary added to the lead as Brian Rios walked, Miller hit his first home run of the season, Price walked, advanced to second base on a wild pitch, and scored on a Tellam run batted in single for a 9-5 advantage.

Game 2 of this double-header will take place at approximately 10:00 PM MDT.

The Vipers return to Calgary and Foothills Stadium for their home opener on Thursday May 26th at 6:30 PM MDT against their Alberta rivals, the Edmonton Capitals.
