
Thunder Outslug Roadrunners in Exhibition

EDINBURG, Texas---The McAllen Thunder defeated the Edinburg Roadrunners 14-12 in an exhibition game Tuesday afternoon at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.
The Roadrunners got the scoring started in the bottom of the first. Cody McMorris started things off with a single and then stole second base. A throwing error allowed McMorris to come in and score and Adam Gordon to go to second. After moving to third on a ground out, Gordon came into score on an RBI ground out by Stantrel Smith giving Edinburg the 2-0 lead.
Smith started the bottom of the fourth with a walk and then stole second and third base. Osiel Flores then hit an RBI double to left center field that allowed Smith to score. With runners on the corners, Gabe Memmert drove in Flores from third on an RBI ground out extending the Roadrunners lead 4-0.
The Thunder grabbed the lead in the top of the fifth inning when they sent 13 batters to the plate and scored eight runs on six hits to take the 8-4 advantage.
In the bottom of the sixth, C.J. Beatty led off with a walk and then came into score on an RBI double to left center field by R.J. Harris which made it 8-5 Thunder.
Dan Courey extended the Thunder's lead to 9-5 in the top of the seventh with an RBI double that drove in former Roadrunner Adam Matos from first base.
The Roadrunners inched closer in the bottom of the seventh against Brandon Veronee. After a couple of walks and an error put runners at second and third with two outs, Beatty hit a two-run triple making it a 9-7 McAllen lead.
A solo home run by Yordanys Perez in the top of the eighth extended the Thunder lead to 10-7.
McAllen added four more runs in the top of the ninth against right-hander Shayn Holbrook. Former Roadrunner Wilson Batista hit an RBI single that allowed Derrick Marshal to score from second. A wild pitch then allowed Perez to score from third and Batista to move to third. After a walk to Mike Goss, Jeff Flagg hit a two-run double that scored Batista and Goss to make it 14-7 in favor of the Thunder.
The Roadrunners responded in the bottom of the ninth with five runs of their own. Jason Thomas led off the inning with a triple and then came into score on an RBI single by Robert Matlock. Smith then followed with a single to put two runners on for Beatty who hit a two-run triple to score Matlock and Smith from first and second. Harris then hit an RBI infield single that allowed Beatty to score. After a stolen base by Harris, he came into score on an RBI single by Cody McMorris to get the score to 14-12.
Mike Causi retired the final two outs to close out the game giving the Thunder the 14-12 victory.
The Thunder open their 2011 season on Wednesday May 25 as they travel to San Angelo for a four-game series.
