Mike Washington Talks Open Try Outs
September 30, 2011 - Arena Football League (AFL)
Pittsburgh Power News Release
Mike Washington led the Power with 114 receptions, receiving yards with 1367 yards, and 31 touchdowns in 2012 after getting noticed in the Power's 2010 open tryouts. Recently, we were able to chat with Mike regarding his tryout experience and his rookie season in the AFL:
Q: What was it like to try out for the Pittsburgh Power'
A: "I was nervous at first only because I didn't know what to expect and how fierce the competition was going to be. But after the nerves went away, I just zoned in and concentrated on the tasks at hand, one by one."
Q: How did it feel to get invited to a private workout and eventually pre-season camp'
A: "Getting invited to a private workout with the Power meant I caught some attention, which is a good thing. Getting invited to camp meant I only got over one big obstacle. The other was making the team."
Q: What was it like to not only make the team, but to thrive as the number one receiver on the Pittsburgh Power'
A: "I surprised myself with the season I had. I should have not been so shocked because I knew how much hard work I had put in and the crazy business side of football I had to deal with. I'm a true believer in hard work and visualization. It's the recipe on accomplishing any dreams you set your mind to."
"Retaining Washington was a high priority for us this off-season," said team owner and GM Matt Shaner. "His play on the field speaks for itself. But beyond that, he is a local player who found his way to us through the open tryouts and has made the most of that opportunity." Coach Chris Siegfried also praised Washington, adding, "He'll only get better as he plays this game more. He has game-changing talent and great drive to succeed."
Mike Washington starred at Aliquippa High School before playing for the University of Hawaii. He started at wide receiver in Hawaii, helping the Warriors go undefeated and win the WAC championship in 2007, and recorded 62 receptions, 789 yards receiving and 6 TDs in 2008. Mike worked out with several NFL teams before signing with the Power following open tryouts in 2010.st .
