Saint John Sea Dogs News Release
The Saint John Sea Dogs announced today that former Sea Dogs Captain Mike Thomas has been named President of the Sea Dogs Alumni Association. Thomas is the first President of the Sea Dogs Alumni Association.
"Being the first President of the Sea Dogs alumni association is an honour" said Thomas. "I have wanted to remain connected to the Sea Dogs and now that I am in Fredericton, I am close enough to help support the organization. Being the first in this allows some flexibility in making decisions about the direction of the alumni association. There is great value in creating and enhancing connections with all past players."
The New Brunswick native captained the Sea Dogs to the 2011 MasterCard Memorial Cup and has played professionally in both the American Hockey League and East Coast League. He most recently won back to back David Johnston University Cups (2016 and 2017) with the UNB Varsity Reds while completing his teaching degree.
"The 2019-2020 season is around the corner and it will be the Sea Dogs fifteenth season" said Sea Dogs President and General Manager, Trevor Georgie. "We have had hundreds of players come through our program and the time is right to formalize it and put more responsibility in our players' hands. We could not think of a better choice than the man who captained us to our first and only Memorial Cup."
Thomas will chart the course for the newly formed Alumni Association, and wants to focus on how to better connect with, and support former Sea Dogs players.
"The planning process for the association is still in early stages, however one clear goal of mine is making and maintaining connections" said Thomas. "Finding ways to keep everyone connected is essential in continuing the shared bond that we all experienced during our time playing for the Sea Dogs. Providing opportunities for past players to reconnect and meet other players from different eras is important. Everyone who has played for the team has helped progress the organization to where it is today."
In Summer 2019, Thomas will be the second inductee in the recently launched Sea Dogs Hall of Fame. This was announced to the over 500 in attendance at Jonathan Huberdeau's induction ceremony in June.
