Mike Stapleton Named Syracuse Crunch Assistant Coach

Syracuse, NY (June 14, 2010) - The Syracuse Crunch announced today that the Anaheim Ducks have named Mike Stapleton the Crunch's assistant coach.

Stapleton, 44, comes to the Crunch after spending the last four years as either an assistant coach or associate coach in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) with Sault Ste. Marie (2008-10) and Erie (2006-08). Prior to his time in the OHL, Stapleton served as an assistant coach for the North American Hockey League's (NAHL) Traverse City North Stars during the 2005-06 campaign.

In addition to his coaching career, Stapleton is a veteran of 14 National Hockey League seasons, appearing in 697 combined games with seven different clubs (Chicago, Pittsburgh, Edmonton, Winnipeg/Phoenix, Atlanta, the NY Islanders and Vancouver) from 1986-2001, collecting 71 goals, 111 assists and 342 penalty minutes. He also skated in 34 NHL playoff contests, contributing one goal and 39 penalty minutes.

Prior to turning pro, Stapleton appeared in 182 games over three seasons with Cornwall (OHL) from 1983-86, tallying 104 goals, 154 assists and 236 penalty minutes. He has also represented his country as both a player and coach, skating as a member of the 1986 silver medal-winning Canadian World Junior team and serving as an assistant coach on the 2006-07 Canadian Men's Under-18 squad.

A native of Strathroy, Ontario, Stapleton was selected by Chicago in the seventh round, 132nd overall, in the 1984 NHL Entry Draft. Stapleton becomes the eighth assistant coach in Crunch history (Curt Fraser 1994-95, Ted Sator 1996-97, Glenn Patrick 1997-99, Barry Smith 1999-00, Ross Yates 2000-06, Trent Cull 2006-10 and Karl Goehring 2009-10).
