Torrington Titans News Release

Mike Gibbons was wondering what all the fuss was about after he got the final out of the seventh inning in the Torrington Titans game against the Seacoast Mavericks on Friday night at Fuessenich Park.

As his teammates flooded out to the mound to congratulate him for doing something incredibly special, it sunk in. He had pitched a no-hitter even though he thought the game was scheduled to go nine innings.

"I knew I hadn't given up any hits but didn't realize the game was only seven innings." Gibbons said. "I thought we were playing nine so I didn't think much of it."

The Titans won their fourth game in the last five by a 2-0 score and would get to the .500 mark for the first time this season with a 5-2 win in the nightcap to go to 8-8 aided by a three-run home run off the bat of Mike Odenwaelder.

In the process, Torrington jumped from eighth to sixth in the standings and now sit just two games behind Martha's Vineyard (10-6).

Gibbons faced just 22 batters in the opener, allowing just two walks with one being erased on a double play.

"My two-seamer was working and I just tried to keep the batters off balance all night." Gibbons said.

A sophomore at Wheaton College, Gibbons has dominated the Mavericks in his two starts by allowing just one run on three hits over 14 innings.

Kaleb Holbrook knocked in both runs for Torrington, driving in Jim Topps in the first and third innings.

The Titans travel to Wachusett on Saturday to take on the Dirt Dawgs (3-11).

Torrington has split with the Dawgs so far this year in four meetings.

Chris Hatfield will be on the mound for the Titans, making his first start of the summer.
