Salt Lake Bees News Release
SALT LAKE CITYâSalt Lake Stingers' manager Mike Brumley has accepted the position of Minor League Field Coordinator for the Texas Rangers' organization. After managing for four years in the Angels' organization (three seasons in Salt Lake), Brumley will begin working at the Rangers' minor league spring training facility in Surprise, AZ this week. The Angels will announce the Stingers' new coaching staff later this winter.
"It was a tough decision," Brumley stated about the move. "The Angels' organization has been great, and I especially enjoyed my time in Salt Lake. It is fun to see the guys in the [American League] playoffs and I wish them the best."
Brumley, 41, posted a 202-229 record (.469) in three seasons as skipper of the Stingers. Brumley managed the 2004 Pacific Coast League All-Star team in Pawtucket, RI. He led the Stingers to a disappointing 56-88 record in 2004 and a 68-75 record in 2003. In 2002, Brumley guided the club to a 78-66 record while winning the PCL Central Division pennant. In that season, Brumley's first Triple-A campaign, Salt Lake made it to the PCL Championship Series and fell 3-1 to the Edmonton Trappers. Mike led the 2001 Arkansas Travelers to the double-A Texas League Championship in his first season in the Angels' organization. The Oklahoma City native was also selected to coach the US Team at the All-Star Futures Game during the 2002 season. Brumley's minor league career managerial record is 360-401 (.473).
Brumley played in parts of eight seasons in the Major Leagues as a utilityman, playing for the Cubs, Tigers, Mariners, Red Sox, Astros and A's. At the Triple-A level, Brumley suited up for Iowa, Las Vegas, Toledo, Calgary, Pawtucket, Tucson, Tacoma and Edmonton, winning PCL Championships with Las Vegas in 1988 and Tucson in 1993. Mike played every position except catcher in his 14-year playing career, retiring after the 1996 season. Brumley made his major league debut for the Cubs on June 16, 1987. Originally selected by Boston in the second round of the 1983 free agent draft, Brumley was traded with Dennis Eckersley to Chicago for Bill Buckner. Mike played baseball for the University of Texas, where he teamed with future Major Leaguers Roger Clemens, Spike Owen and Calvin Schiraldi to lead the Longhorns to three straight College World Series appearances and the 1983 NCAA Baseball Championship. Mike and his wife Dana reside in Tucson, AZ, with their four children (Logan, Shailey, Erin and Jackson).
