Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
CORPUS CHRISTI - Joel Seddon pitched five scoreless innings and Beau Taylor drove in three runs as Midland dropped Corpus Christi 6-2 in Game 1 of the Texas League South Division Series Wednesday at Whataburger Field before 3,805.
The Hooks turned three double plays but left 15 men on base and were 1-of-15 with runners in scoring position.
Corpus Christi blustered in the first only to come up empty. Garrett Stubbs' single preceded walks by J.D. Davis and Ramon Laureano. Conrad Gregor then flew to right.
The Hooks again threatened the next inning. Nick Tanielu singled to center and two outs later advanced to third on Bobby Boyd's ground-rule double. They were left in scoring position as Drew Ferguson flied to center field.
Midland was more opportunistic during a three-run, five-hit third against Francis Martes (0-1). Max Schrock opened with a double and crossed on Brett Vertigan's single after a Richie Martin bunt hit. Taylor added a two-run single in the wake of J.P. Sportman's sacrifice.
Three straight RockHounds singles loaded the bases with nobody out in the fourth, but Martes popped Vertigan up to third baseman J.D. Davis and induced a double-play ball off the bat of Sportman.
Seddon faced a bases-loaded, one-out fourth-inning jam before Boyd bounced into an inning-ending twin killing, putting Corpus Christi's left-on-base count at seven.
Seddon (1-0), who scattered five hits, walked three and fanned four in a 92-pitch, 53-strike outing.
His replacement, Trey Cochran-Gill, lost the shutout when Tanielu belted a one-out pitch 346 feet to left on a first-pitch offering.
Ryan Thompson relieved Martes for the seventh. The Hooks starter allowed 10 hits, walked one, and struck out six.
Corpus Christi closed to 3-2 with Sam Bragg on the mound. Ferguson drove a one-out triple to left-center and scored when Stubbs singled the other way. Bragg went on to strand three runners in his lone inning of work and gave way to Kyle Finnegan, who left two aboard in the eighth.
Midland opened up a four-run advantage vs. Kevin Comer during its final turn. Yairo Munoz singled to begin the surge and moved into scoring position via Schrock's walk. Both advanced two bases on a wild pitch and catcher Roberto Pena's subsequent errant throw to third. Sportman's two-out infield single plated Schrock and the RockHounds left fielder tallied when Taylor greeted Jacob Dorris with a single.
Midland closer Jake Sanchez sidestepped singles by Davis and Ramon Laureano to cap the RockHounds' four-reliever effort.
Game 2 of the series is Thursday at 7:05 and the Hooks send Trent Thornton (3-1) against Corey Walter (3-2). Fans enjoy Stripes Thirsty Thursday featuring discounted beer and soda.
