Springfield Cardinals News Release

The Midland RockHounds completed a three-game sweep of the Springfield Cardinals on Tuesday afternoon, winning 6-3 at Hammons Field. The win gives the Hounds a 6-0 record, while it drops Springfield to 0-6 in 2008.

Midland pitching was the story again, holding Springfield to just three hits on the day, this after holding the Cards scoreless on five hits on Monday night.

The Hounds took a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning against Cards' starter PJ Walters. Brian Snyder led off with a ground ball to third that was mishandled by Allen Craig. Jesus Guzman followed with a double off the wall in right field. Snyder initially stopped at third, but right fielder Shane Robinson's throw to second got away, allowing Snyder to score to make it 1-0. Two batters later, Myron Leslie picked up an RBI double to chase home Guzman, giving Midland a 2-0 lead.

Springfield got their only offense with two outs in the bottom of the inning. After Jose Martinez earned a two-out walk, Jon Jay ripped a line drive over the right-center field fence, tying the game at 2-2 with his first homer of the year.

Midland went back on top for good in the fifth, as Adam Klein singled with one out and eventually scored on a passed ball, giving the Hounds a 3-2 lead.

The RockHounds added a run in the seventh, as Tommy Everidge was issued a bases loaded walk, forcing home Klein for a 4-2 lead.

Solo home runs for John Zeringue and Guzman rounded out the scoring as Midland got a run in each of the last two innings to take a 6-2 lead.

Midland starting pitcher Michael Madsen (2-0) earned the win, going six innings while allowing just two runs on three hits. The Hounds bullpen didn't allow a Springfield base runner over the final three innings.

Walters (0-2) got hit with the loss, allowing three runs, one earned on six hits over five innings.

The Redbirds will take a day off on Wednesday, then hit the road on Thursday night, as they play their first road game of the 2008 season on Thursday in Frisco. Jaime Garcia (0-1) will throw for Springfield, while Frisco will counter with Scott Feldman (1-0). Game time on Thursday will be 7:00pm. The Cards return to Hammons Field on Thursday, April 17th, as they face the Tulsa Drillers in a four-game home stand.
