MIDFIELDER DAVID GUZMÃN, DEFENDER ALVAS POWELL CALLED UP FOR INTERNATIONAL MATCHES Guzmán and Powell will return to Portland prior to the Timbers match against the Colorado Rapids on June 17
PORTLAND, Ore. - Portland Timbers midfielder David Guzmán has been named to the Costa Rica Men's National Team roster for a pair of 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifying matches against Panama and Trinidad and Tobago. Additionally, defender Alvas Powell has been named to Jamaica's roster for an international friendly against Peru.
Following both matches with Costa Rica, Guzmán will rejoin the Timbers ahead of the team's away match against the Colorado Rapids on Saturday, June 17. Powell will join the Jamaican National Team following the Timbers home match against FC Dallas on Saturday, before returning for the June 17 contest against Colorado.
Guzmán, 27, has joined Costa Rica for the team's home match against Panama on June 8. Beginning at 7 p.m. (Pacific), the match against Panama will be played at Estadio Nacional de Costa Rica. Following the June 8 fixture, Guzmán and Costa Rica will play host to Trinidad and Tobago at Estadio Nacional de Costa Rica on June 13, with the match set to kick off at 7 p.m. (Pacific).
Powell, 22, is set to join Jamaica for an international friendly against Peru on Tuesday, June 13. Beginning at 5:30 p.m. (Pacific), the match against Peru will be played at Estadio Monumental de la UNSA in Arequipa, Peru.
Since making his senior team debut in 2010, Guzmán has earned 31 caps for Costa Rica, most recently playing in two 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifying matches against Mexico on March 24 and Honduras on March 28. During the 2017 MLS season, Guzmán has made 13 appearances (13 starts) for the Timbers, scoring his first MLS goal in the team's 4-2 win against the Houston Dynamo on March 18, while also ranking tied for the most assists (4) on the team.
Powell has made 22 international appearances for the Reggae Boyz, including seven caps (6 starts) in 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifying matches. With the Timbers this season, Powell has made 12 appearances (12 starts), recording three assists.
