Midfielder Clara Schilke Retires from NWSL

CARY, N.C. - North Carolina Courage midfielder Clara Schilke (nee Robbins) has announced her retirement from the National Women's Soccer League, effective immediately. The 2023 first round draft pick is stepping away to spend time with family.
The Courage selected Schilke ninth overall in the 2023 NWSL Draft out of Florida State. She made three professional appearances as a rookie before suffering a ruptured Achilles tendon. The 25-year-old got married last summer.
"Stepping away from the game that I love so deeply is one of the most difficult decisions I've ever had to make. This sport has given me so much and has made an immeasurable impact on my life. Countless core memories and deep, lifelong friendships are intertwined with soccer and the people I've met through it. But, after lengthy reflection, it's become clear my immediate focus needs to be on spending time with my family.
The Courage have been great to me since day one. I am so thankful for the players, coaches, and staff that have made my time here so special and their support through this process has been incredible. This club and soccer will always hold a special place in my heart. I hope to one day give more back to this sport that has given me so much," Schilke said.
"Clara had to make the decision to spend more time with her family at this time, and she has our full support. She has been an amazing person to have on our team and in our locker room. She's such a good footballer who has unfortunately had to deal with a tough injury the last year. When she and I spoke about this decision, we both agreed this is what she needed to do. Soccer will be here. We will be here. If my phone rings with her name on it, I will for sure answer it. We will miss her, and we will support her from afar for the time being. We care about her a lot and know this is the best decision for her and her family at this moment," said Courage Head Coach Sean Nahas.
Schilke had been on the 2023 Season-Ending Injury list while recovering from her Achilles injury, so the Courage active roster does not change.
Schilke graduated from Florida State as the all-time leader in games played, winning a pair of national championships in 2018 and 2021. She was a two-time All-ACC selection and ACC Tournament MVP.
