CHESTER, Pa. - After helping Bethlehem Steel FC fight back for a 2-2 draw against reigning USL Cup Champions Louisville City FC, Chavany Willis was named to the USL Championship Team of the Week for Week 12.
Appearing in his 12th match with Steel FC, the midfielder scored a brace in the second half to erase a two-goal deficit against the Bluegrass visitors.
The Jamaican began his strong second half with a goal in the 51st minute after Philadelphia Union forward Michee Ngalina was brought down in the box by defender Paco Craig. Willis calmly slotted the ball just passed the outstretched hands of goalkeeper Ben Lundt for his second goal of 2019. Six minutes later Willis earned another goal scoring chance, when the ball popped out to him just outside the top of the box on a poor clearance from the visitors. Willis blasted the shot home to level for the Steel and complete his first brace for the club.
The accolade marks the first time in Willis' career that he has earned an appearance on the USL Championship Team of the Week and the fourth such honor for Steel FC this season. Midfielder Zach Zandi earned the honor in Week One for his performance against Birmingham Legion FC, defender Ben Ofeimu earned the honor in Week Five for his goal and assist against Swope Park Rangers, along with Philadelphia Union forward Kacper Przybylko in Week Six for his brace against Charleston Battery. Willis was also nominated for USL Championship Goal of the Week for his equalizer.
Bethlehem Steel FC heads north to renew its rivalry with New York Red Bulls II on Friday, May 31 at MSU Soccer Park in Montclair, N.J. Kickoff is slated for 7:00 p.m. ET and will be broadcast on ESPN+.
