
Middleton Makes Mark in Venezuelan League

DEALING - Kyle Middleton, Corpus Christi's 2007 saves leader (23), is plowing through the Venezuelan Winter League with a 1-0 record and 0.57 ERA. The 27-year-old right-hander has started three games for the Tigres de Aragua, holding the opposition to one run and seven hits over 15 2/3 innings. He's walked one and fanned 10.
Elsewhere in Venezuela, Navegantes del Magallanes, managed by Al Pedrique, features a number of Houston farmhands. Corpus Christi alum Mark Saccomanno leads the pack with 12 hits, two doubles, two home runs and 10 RBIs in 12 games. Outfielder Francisco Caraballo is 2-for-10 with two runs scored and one double. Right-handed reliever German Melendez has worked three games for Magallanes, yielding four runs over 5 1/3 innings. TOPP HONORS - Astros prospect Mitch Einertson, who has an opportunity to play with the Hooks in 2008, has been named 2007 Topps Player of the Year in the Carolina League.
MESA MEETS TEAM USA - Leaders of the Arizona Fall League East Division with a 10-7 record, the Solar Sox experienced a bump in the road yesterday, falling 10-2 to Team USA at Mesa's HoHoKam Park. The national team, now 2-2 against AFL foes, plays two more games before heading to Taiwan for the IABF World Cup November 6-18. Einertson leads the Sox with a .310 average over nine games. The 2007 Carolina League MVP has notched two doubles, three homers and eight RBIs. Tommy Manzella and Josh Flores have eight and 13 hits, respectively. Manzella has driven in three runs, Flores five.
Josh Muecke continues his success on the mound, allowing one run through 11 1/3 innings. The 25-year-old southpaw has walked three and struck out six. Opponents are hitting just .184 off Muecke. Brad James, the right-hander from Prosper, is 1-0 with a 3.27 ERA in three starts. Jimmy Barthmaier has yielded six runs in seven games.
