Miami Tropics Avenge Season Opener Loss to the Imperials

November 20, 2006 - American Basketball Association (ABA)
Palm Beach Imperials News Release

Davie, FL - November 20, 2006 - In an exciting wire-to-wire game, the Miami Tropics narrowly defeated the Palm Beach Imperials with a final score of 114-110.

The game was closely contested with the Tropics taking a 53-47 lead into halftime and it continued as the score was tied at 84 after 3 quarters.

Then things got heated in the 4th quarter as the Tropics turned up the physical play. The Tropics began punishing the Imperials on the inside offensively and also got physical with their defense.

However, the game got too physical when, on a Palm Beach Imperials fast break, Terence Shelman of the Miami Tropics, intentionally fouled Raphael Morris of the Imperials by grabbing Morris' arm in mid-air, as he was attempting an open layup, and swung him down from the air to the hard parquet. After doing so, Shelman started to bump chests with the Palm Beach Imperial players and began taunting.

As children and fans who were in attendance, watched such an egregious act, many of the parents complained that the game has progressed to such a low level, and that they did not want their children to seek basketball being played in that manner.

Even after the intentional foul and subsequent taunting, Shelman was allowed to remain in the game and continue his physical style of basketball.

"I'm not going to let my basketball players be treated that way," stated Imperials Head Coach, Lamont Carr. "We are trying to play a fair professional basketball game and are competing as men. That type of behavior has no place in the ABA, and the league should take action to ensure that this doesn't happen again and others don't follow this example."

Yet in spite of the adversity, the Palm Beach Imperials made it an exciting contest having tied the game late in the 4th quarter. The Imperials are still considering contesting the game.

Ultimately, the Imperials lost the contest as Art Alvarez and the Miami Tropics won their first regular season game after having lost all of their previous regular season contests including their home opener to the Imperials.
