Buzzer-beaten Slam welcome Beijing Olympians Wednesday
November 20, 2006 - American Basketball Association (ABA)
Bellingham Slam News Release
Bellingham, Wash. - Coming off back-to-back two-point losses, including a game Friday which saw the visitors hit a game-winning three-pointer with three seconds remaining, the Bellingham Slam welcome the Beijing Olympians to town for a pair of games Tuesday and Wednesday at Whatcom Pavilion. Both games will begin at 7 p.m.
The Slam are offering a couple great promotions for this week's games. On Tuesday, the team will be holding a paper airplane contest at halftime, with one fan guaranteed to walk away with a pair of round-trip tickets to Las Vegas on Allegiant Air. On Wednesday, the Slam will be holding a holiday food drive, with fans receiving half-price admission if they bring a canned food item to the game. All donations will be given to the Bellingham Food Bank.
The Slam's opponent, the Beijing Olympians, are a former Chinese Basketball Association team playing their second season in the ABA. Last season, the Slam went 1-2 against Beijing, including a 122-105 win on Dec. 8, 2005 in Bellingham where Mike Parker scored 27 points to lead the Slam over the previously-unbeaten Olympians.
The Olympians (0-0) roster includes a combination of American and Chinese players, including five players measuring 6'9" or taller. The team is led by Fred Vinsion, a Georgia Tech grad who played a handful of games in the NBA with the Seattle Supersonics in 2000.
The Slam (1-2) will be searching for their first home win this season after dropping two nail-biters to the Hollywood Fame last week. The Slam are being led by a trio of returning players, with Mike Parker, Jacob Stevenson, and Brandon Hartley averaging 33, 21, and 18 points per game, respectively. Newcomer Michael Jones has also come on strong lately, scoring 30 points in Friday's game.
Following this week's games, the Slam will head out on a four-game road trip before returning to Whatcom Pavilion on Dec. 12 to face the Fresno Heatwave. Tickets for all games are currently on sale by calling the team at 734-SLAM or by purchasing online at www.bellinghamslam.com.
Note: OurSports Central no longer actively covers the American Basketball Association (ABA) as a professional league due in part to its inability to publish and play a schedule and the transitory nature of many of its teams.
