
Mets, Tortugas Split Doubleheader in Daytona

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (June 19, 2017) - The St. Lucie Mets and Daytona Tortugas split a doubleheader on Monday at Jackie Robinson Ballpark. Daytona won the first game 4-2 while the Mets recovered to win the second contest 4-3 in eight innings.
In game 2, the Mets used the long ball to secure the win and end an eight-game losing streak. Peter Alonso crushed a three-run homer in the fourth inning to give the Mets a 3-1 lead.
Tyler Bashlor surrendered a two-run double to Chris Okey in the bottom of the seventh that tied the game 3-3 and forced extra innings.
J.C. Rodriguez broke the tie with a two-out solo home run off of Jake Ehret in the eighth. Bashlor got redemption by pitching a perfect bottom half of the eighth with two strikeouts to get the win.
Mets starter Kevin Canelon only gave up one run and four hits in two innings. The run was a homer hit by Shed Long. Josh Torres recorded five strikeouts in two innings of relief.
In game 1, the Tortugas broke a 2-2 tie in the bottom of the sixth. Nick Senzel started the frame with a double. He scored on Daniel Sweet's RBI single. Reydel Medina added an insurance run later in the inning with a sac fly.
Zack Weiss retired the Mets in order in the seventh to end the game.
Andrew Church took a tough loss. He pitched all six innings and was hurt by a few misplayed balls by the Mets outfield. Church scattered eight hits and four runs. He matched his season high with five strikeouts.
John Mora went 2 for 3 from the leadoff spot and scored in the first inning to put the Mets up 1-0.
Dale Burdick went 1 for 3 with a double and a run. Eudor Garcia, in his season debut, went 1 for 3 with a RBI base hit in the fifth that brought home Burdick to briefly tie the game 2-2.
Daytona starter Vladimir Gutierrez pitched 5.1 innings and allowed two runs in a no-decision.
The Mets (31-35) and Tortugas (33-30) will play a single nine-inning game on Tuesday at Jackie Robinson Ballpark. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.
