St. Lucie Mets News Release
DUNEDIN, Fla. - The St. Lucie Mets hit five home runs, tying for the second most in a single game in team history, as they pounded the Dunedin Blue Jays 8-6 on Wednesday to halt a four-game losing streak.
Stanley Consuegra and Jack-Thomas Wold hit back-to-back homers to start the fourth inning against Dunedin starter Michael Dominguez to open up a 3-0 lead.
Justin Guerrera led off the sixth inning with a home run to make it 6-2 and Fernando Villalobos bashed a two-out shot in the inning to put the Mets up 7-2.
Raul Beracierta hit a towering opposite field homer in the eighth to make it 8-2.
All five home runs were solo blasts. The homers were the first of the season for Wold and Villalobos.
Mets starter Luis Moreno allowed two runs (both unearned) over 6.0 innings to get the win. He scattered four hits, walked three and struck out three.
The Mets turned three double plays in the game, bringing their total on the season to 44. None was bigger than the one induced by reliever Nate Jones on his first pitch of the seventh inning with the bases loaded and leading 7-2. He started a 1-2-3 inning-ending double play off the bat of Gabriel Martinez.
Jones got another double play in the bottom of the ninth for the first two outs. The Blue Jays rallied for four straight hits and three runs after that, bringing Damiano Palmegiani to the plate as the tying run. Jones was able to get Palmegiani to hit a long fly out to center field to end the game.
The win ended the Mets season-long four-game losing streak. It also halted Dunedin's four-game winning streak.
The single game record for homers in a game for the Mets is six, set back in 2009. The Mets had five-homer games in 1998, 2001 and 2012.
The Mets (27-14) and Blue Jays (18-23) play the third game of their series at TD Ballpark on Thursday. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
