MetroStars Pre-Season Schedule Announced: The MetroStars announced today their 2004 preseason schedule, which is highlighted by a trip to Spain and two trips to Florida.
The first trip will be to Bradenton, FL and will take place February 7-18. During the trip the Metros will play three games: against the Chicago Fire on Wednesday, February 11, against DC United on Saturday, February 14, and against the Kansas City Wizards on Monday, February 16.
The second training stint for the "Red and Black" will be to La Manga Soccer Club in Murcia, Spain and will take place from February 21-March 6. During this time, the Metros will be playing in the La Manga Cup. The nine team tournament includes the Dallas Burn and the San Jose Earthquakes along with the MetroStars from MLS, Bodo Glimt, Viking, Odd Grenland and Stabaek from the Norwegian Tippeligaen, Dinamo Kiev from the Ukranian First Division and the Gif Sundsvall from Switzerland's first division.
The Metros have been drawn into group play with Bodo Glimt and Viking, who finished second and fifth respectively last year in the Tippeligaen.
The MetroStars final trip of the year will be to Fort Lauderdale, FL from March 9-20. The MetroStars will play a series of games on this trip, but that schedule is still to be determined.
The MetroStars begin their ninth MLS season on Saturday, April 3 at Eastern Conference rival Columbus Crew at 7:30 p.m. ET. The "Red and Black" will host 14-year-old phenom Freddy Adu and D.C. United on Saturday, April 17 at Giants Stadium in their 2004 home opener. The game will be the first time that the young superstar, who was drafted with the first overall pick by United in the 2004 SuperDraft, will play in Giants Stadium.
Metros Trio Again Called by Arena: U.S. Soccer has announced that Eddie Pope, Jonny Walker and John Wolyniec are among the 17 players that have been called into U.S. National Team camp beginning on February 4, by manager Bruce Arena. The camp will take place in Bradenton, Florida and will last 10 days before the team departs for Amsterdam, where they will play their first road match of 2004 against Holland on February 18th.
The trio all participated in the team's last camp and they all saw action in the U.S. team's friendly match against Denmark on January 18th, at the Home Depot Center in Carson, CA. The contest marked the full international debut of Jonny Walker and John Wolyniec. In addition the game marked the National Team's first contest at the HDC.
Clark Out: MetroStars midfielder Ricardo Clark underwent a successful procedure Friday to repair a sports hernia injury. Dr. Richard Cattey performed the procedure in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The United States U-20 and U-23 star will likely be out for eight weeks.
When the Jonesboro, Georgia native joins the Metros he will undergo an aerobic program as part of the rehabilitation of the injury.
The MetroStars sent Clark to see the specialist after the player complained of discomfort during U-23 training last week at the Home Depot Center in Carson, California.
Bartolomeu and Wolyniec Join Team: After spending time with the Canadian and United States National Team respectively both Edgar Bartolomeu and John Wolyniec returned to practice today for the Metros.
Bartolomeu, who gained Canadian residency last year, was called by Canadian National Team Head Coach (and former San Jose Earthquakes Head Coach) Frank Yallop into national team training camp from January 12-23 in Fort Lauderdale, FL. During the camp Canada played a friendly against Barbados on January 18th in Bridgetown, Barbados but Bartolomeu did not see any action.
Wolyniec on the other hand earned his first cap with the U.S. National Team in a friendly on January 18th, in a 1-1 tie with Denmark at the Home Depot Center in Carson, CA. He entered the game for Chris Armas in the 88th minute, and subsequently became the 51st different player to earn his first cap under national team Manager Bruce Arena.
Eddie Gaven, Amado Guevara, Eddie Pope and Jonny Walker will all be with their respective national teams and not reporting to camp at this time. They will all join the Metros when their national team duties are completed.
Young Metros In Dallas Cup: The MetroStars U-18 will be competing in the 2004 Dallas Cup in the U-19 division. Touted as one of the most prestigious youth tournaments in the world, the Dallas Cup will take place April 4-11 in Dallas, Texas. This marks the first time that the MetroStars will send a youth team to the tournament.
MetroStars Get Five Invitees to ODP Tryout: Five members of the MetroStars U-18 team participated in the Super Y-League ODP Regional Identification Weekend in Cocoa Beach, FL last weekend. With the five invitees, the MetroStars had the more players than any other team in Region One at the tryout. The Players included Yomar Gonzales (St. Joseph's High School), Amir Hagshenas (Ramapo High School), Peter Kasanyenko (Columbia High School), Pino Tubito (Morris Catholic High School) and John Wells (Montclair High School).
Bradley Honored: Bob Bradley was honored by the New Jersey Sports Writers Association yesterday at its annual banquet at the Pines Manor in Edison, New Jersey. Bradley was the recipient of the "Distinguished Service to Soccer Award" and also was inducted into the NJ Sports Writers Association's prestigious Hall of Fame.
Bradley was selected to receive these honors because of his dedication to the sport of soccer and his ties to the state of New Jersey. Bradley, a New Jersey native, led his high school alma mater West Essex to a Group III State championship in 1973. He then went on to a successful college career at Princeton University where he led the Tigers in scoring his senior year.
Bradley, has had the same amount of success he had as a player as he has had as a coach. He coached the Princeton Tigers to two Ivy League titles, three NCAA tournament bids, and led his squad to the NCAA Final Four for the first and only time in the history of the school. In Major League Soccer, Bradley has become the all-time winningest coach in league history. In 1998, he was named MLS Coach of the Year for his accomplishments with the Chicago Fire. Last year, Bradley came back to New Jersey to coach the MetroStars. In his first year as head coach Bradley led the Metros to the franchise's first final in the Open Cup and to the MLS playoffs. For these accomplishments, he was again nominated MLS Coach of the Year.
In addition to Bradley, Walt Frazier, Ken Daneyko, and Dan Calandrillo were also be honored for their dedication to their respective sports and their ties to the New Jersey sports fan base. This is the 68th banquet held to honor professional and college athletes as well as sports personalities in New Jersey and surrounding areas. These banquets have drawn sold-out crowds every year since its inception making it one of the most popular and elite sports banquets in the nation.
