The Mississauga MetroStars opened their inaugural campaign in the Major Arena Soccer League (MASL) Saturday with an 11-3 loss to the defending champion Blast in an Eastern Division clash before 3,811 fans at the SECU Arena in Baltimore. Daniel Peruzzi, Vini Dantas, John Orlando and Adriano Dos Santos all scored a pair for the Blast who jumped out to a 3-0 lead within the first seven minutes of the first quarter.
Dwayne De Rosario had a goal called off in the first quarter before scoring the MetroStars' first ever goal at 6:55 of the second quarter, on a goal from a restart, assisted by Martinho Dumevski. Mo Babouli cut the deficit further on a power play goal at 11:09, also from Dumevski, but the Blast added two goals from Peruzzi before halftime.
The Blast scored three more goals in the third quarter to open up an 8-2 lead and pull away from the MetroStars. Adrian Becic replaced MetroStars' starting goalkeeper Spyros Stergiotis at the start of the fourth quarter and De Rosario netted his second goal with a shot from the top of the circle, assisted by David Velastegui, just 1:10 into the quarter.
But Baltimore added three more goals in the final quarter to complete the scoring on a night when the Blast unveiled their 2017/18 championship banner. The Blast outshot the MetroStars 31-25.
The MetroStars return home tonight and will resume training Monday in view of the next match, their home opener, at the Paramount Fine Foods Centre in Mississauga, against the Florida Tropics, on Saturday, December 8, at 3:05pm (ET).
