Miami, Florida (Wednesday, March 5, 2003) - The MetroStars dropped a 3-0 preseason match to the Dallas Burn tonight in the first match of a Copa Carnaval doubleheader at the Orange Bowl in Miami, Florida. Forward Paul Dalglish, on trial with the Dallas Burn, netted two goals as the Burn outlasted the Metros.

The first half was evenly played by both sides with the only difference proving to be an 11th minute penalty kick awarded to the Burn for a foul committed on forward Jason Kreis. Dallas' all-time leading scorer, who enters his eighth season with the Burn, converted the spot kick beating MetroStars and U.S. National Team goalkeeper Tim Howard.

The Burn's attacks originated mostly down the flanks. The team especially relied on the forays of left midfielder Antonio "Chivas" Martinez, who often penetrated deep down the left side. The MetroStars instead sought a possession game and a patient build-up with Howard making three saves in a first half that featured few scoring opportunities.

The second half was marked by a slew of substitutions as both teams used their benches extensively with only two players from a total of 44 not seeing action in the match.

The MetroStars also continued to evaluate a number of players as Head Coach Bob Bradley carries through the rebuilding process in his first year with the club. Missing star forwards Clint Mathis (hernia procedure) and Jaime Moreno, the MetroStars received respectable performances from Frenchman Frederic Meyrieu at attacking midfield and Kieran McAnespie. The 23-year-old Fulham reserve player, a member of Scotland's 1998 World Cup team, was making his first appearance for the Metros in the preseason at left back.

Dalglish, son of Scottish and Liverpool legend Kenny Dalglish, netted his two goals in the final five minutes to seal the victory. Both tallies (85th and 89th minutes) were generated on identical plays as Dalglish made penetrating runs into the left side of the box before beating goalkeeper Paul Grafer. In between the goals the Metros' Tim Glowienka struck the crossbar with a spectacular 30-yard blast from the left.

The MetroStars next take on the Kansas City Wizards on Friday, March 7 at 3:00 p.m. ET at Nova Southeastern University. The match was the last for the Burn ahead of their overseas training trip to Santiago, Chile between March 12-26.

Quote Sheet: Bob Bradley on the game We never like to lose, whether it is preseason or not. We had a decent start to the game and we were a little unlucky to have the early penalty call go against us. I thought we had a good first 20 minutes of the second half and at the end when we made substitutes we just lost our way.

Jim Rooney on his trial with the Metros It's good to be around. I have a good relationship with Bob. My family is still in New York and family-wise for me this makes sense. We will see how it goes from here. Bob is giving me a good opportunity.

Eddie Pope on the rebuilding process Every game we have different people on the field. We are trying a lot of different things and that is a little difficult, but it is a necessary part of the process. You just have to deal with those bumps in the road and get better. Everybody is trying to find where they fit in. Everyone knows the guys are in and out and we are just trying to work our butts off to get better.

Steve Jolley on the game and the process Just like any time in preseason, there are segments we did pretty well. Actually we did exceptionally well, considering we are missing a lot of pieces and new ones are coming in. It is just a matter of us putting together those 15-20 good minutes and continue it for 90. It is just going to take some time. We have a lot of new players playing important positions. For a good 70-80 minutes we played well. We are still working things out.

Richie Williams on playing with Jim Rooney in the defensive midfield Jimmy is a good player. I have never played with him before, but I have played against him. He's a good competitor, he knows the game, and he's experienced. I think we work well together, so I feel comfortable with that.
