SECAUCUS, NJ (Thursday, April 1, 2004) - The MetroStars announced today that they acquired Brazilian midfielder Gilberto Flores (pronounced: JILL-bear-toe) as a developmental player from Ginasio Pinhalense de Esportes Atlético just prior to the FIFA-imposed transfer window deadline last night. Flores becomes the team's fourth transitional international, joining Bolivian Joselito Vaca, Jamaican Fabian Taylor and Trinidadian Cornell Glen. He will join the "Red and Black" next week.
"We enjoyed having Gilberto with us in Spain," said MetroStars Head Coach Bob Bradley. "He is a hard working young midfielder, who we are looking to working with and continuing in his development."
The 20-year-old Flores participated in preseason with the MetroStars in La Manga, Murcia, Spain at the 2004 La Manga Cup helping the Metros win the tournament. The 5'9", 160-pound midfielder played in three games at the tournament, logging 83 minutes. Flores also started and played the entire game for the Metros in a 0-0 tie with Real Murcia of the Spanish Primera Division at La Manga Club Resort.
