Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release
Add two more new faces to the roster page on the Winnipeg website.
Goldeyes manager Rick Forney announced today the signing of infielders Brent Metheny and Scott Schade. The pair bring the number of signees for 2007 to eight, split evenly between pitchers and position players.
Metheny, 26, batted .272 last year with Kannapolis of the South Atlantic (A) League in his first year as White Sox property. A career .294 hitter in four seasons, he played four positions in 2006, spending most of his time behind the plate where he batted .293 in 24 games.
"I'm very excited about Brent Metheny," Forney said. "He's a good left-handed stick that always gives you a professional at-bat. I've heard a lot of good things about him and, in talking to him, he can't wait to get to Winnipeg and put that uniform on."
Playing for Goldeyes coach Brent Bowers, Metheny just led the Colombian League with a .343 average and was among the leaders in hits, runs batted in and slugging percentage. He's pencilled in to start at third while acting as the back-up catcher. As for Schade, Forney said he could start at first, where he possesses a career .995 career fielding percentage.
"His bat's also got a little bit of thump in it," Forney said. "Scott will hit a few home runs, drive in some runs and hit some doubles and we're excited to see him come in and swing the bat as well."
Schade, 24, batted .220 last season split between the Carolina (A) and South Atlantic Leagues. A career .235 hitter, he spent his first three-plus years in the Braves system out of Auburn before finishing last year in the Washington organization.
Forney expects to add to his roster in the days ahead, including a pair of rookie southpaws.
