April 8, 2009 - National Lacrosse League (NLL)
Portland Lumberjax News Release

PORTLAND, April 8, 2009 - For the second consecutive week, Portland LumberJax defenseman Brodie Merrill has been named the National Lacrosse League's Transition Player of the Week, the league announced today. Merrill scored five goals, added three assists and collected 22 loose balls as the Jax (7-6) went 1-1 during the 14th week of the season.

"It's not typical for a D-Transition player to be considered for league Most Valuable Player, but if the criteria is based on the player who is most valuable to his team, I cannot think of anyone in the league more valuable than Brodie," said Head Coach/General Manager Derek Keenan. "He basically does everything for our team."

On Friday, Merrill scored four points (2 goals, 2 assists) and collected 11 loose balls as Portland fell to the Edmonton Rush, 11-10.

A night later, the Orangeville, Ontario native matched a career-high with three goals as the Jax beat the Colorado Mammoth, 13-12 in overtime. The four-time All-Star also tallied an assist and collected 11 loose balls in the winning effort.

On the season, Merrill has scored 13 goals, added 25 assists and collected 183 loose balls. This is the fifth time in Merrill's career that he's been named the Transition Player of the Week.

The Jax travel to Calgary to meet the Roughnecks at 6:30 p.m. PST on Friday, April 10th. Then, the Jax travel to Minnesota to meet the Swarm at 5 p.m. on Saturday, April 11th at 5 p.m. Both games can be seen via the NLL Network. Go to NLL.com to access the free broadcast.
