John Tavares named National Lacrosse League Overall Player of the Week

April 8, 2009 - National Lacrosse League (NLL) News Release


John Tavares was named the Overall Player of the Week in the National Lacrosse League for the games played on the weekend of April 3-5 (Week #14 of the season). The Buffalo Bandits forward scored six goals and tallied three assists as Buffalo defeated Boston 15-11, and clinched a playoff berth last weekend.

Three San Jose Stealth players were honored for their efforts in an 18-8 home win over Minnesota last weekend. Colin Doyle, Tyler Richards and Rhys Duch were named Offensive, Defensive and Rookie of the Week, respectively.

Brodie Merrill of the Portland LumberJax was named Transition Player of the Week. Merrill recorded eight points and 22 loose balls in a pair of games last weekend.

The Player Awards are chosen by the general managers and head coaches of the league's twelve member clubs.

OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Colin Doyle, San Jose: 3G, 10A for 13 Points. Picked up 3 LB's in 18 - 8 win over Minnesota to move Stealth into a tie for third place.

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Tyler Richards, San Jose: In first career NLL start, the Stealth goaltender 46 Saves / 8 GA in an 18 - 8 win over Minnesota.

TRANSITION PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Brodie Merrill, Portland: In two game, 5G, 3 A for 8 Points, Picked up 22 LB's in a weekend split (loss at Edmonton 11-10, win over Colorado 13-12 in OT)

ROOKIE OF THE WEEK

Rhys Duch, San Jose: 5 G, 3 A for 8 Points in 18 - 8 win over Minnesota.

OVERALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK

John Tavares, Buffalo: 6G, 3A for 9 Points in a 15-11 win over Boston. Game-high nine points helped Buffalo clinch a playoff spot.
