Southaven, MS-The Memphis Xplorers of the af2 have been assigned DS Roy Hopkins by the af2 league office.
Hopkins played college football for the Huskies at the University of Connecticut. He started in 44 straight games, and 48 of 49 overall.
During his senior season Hopkins led the team with six interceptions, completing the second best defensive season in Connecticut football history. Those six interceptions were tied for the 15th best in the NCAA in 2002. As a senior Hopkins compiled 50 solo tackles, three assisted tackles, three tackles for a loss, and 18 pass breakups. He also forced two fumbles, recovered another, and added one blocked kick.
Xplorers Head Coach Danton Barto commented on the Xplorers recent DS assignment. "Roy Hopkins was a highly productive defensive college player. His ability to intercept passes will be a key component of our defensive formula. We have high expectations for him during the upcoming season."
"Roy is a guy who I looked at two years ago when I was at Mohegan," added Xplorers Director of Player Personnel Chris Bauer. "He started from day one at UCONN, putting up impressive numbers during his career. He went down and worked out for Mark Stoute of the Tampa Bay Storm this past month, and showed that with some conditioning work could play the middle for us this season."
Hopkins earned game ball honors for his defensive play twice during his senior season, in the wins over the Buffalo Bulls, and the Iowa State Cyclones.
