Memphis 901 FCClinch Home Playoff Match in2-2 Draw with Rio Grande Valley FC
Memphis, Tenn. -Memphis 901 FC earned a 2-2 draw with the Rio Grande Valley FC Toros on Wednesday night at AutoZone Park.
Memphis moved to 19-8-5 on the season and have clinched a top-4 finish in the Eastern Conference and home field advantage in the first round of the USL Championship playoffs.
Memphis wasted no time getting on the attack, winning a free kick in the Toros' third of the field in the first minute. Aaron Molloy lined up the free kick from 20 yards out, but the strike hit the left post and found the feet of Jeremy Kelly, who put the ball in the net for the eighth time this season to put 901 FC up after only two minutes of action.
901 FC carried the lead into the half preventing Rio Grande Valley from recording a single shot on goal. Memphis has stopped the opposition from scoring a first-half goal in 21 of their 32 games, second most in the USL Championship.
Memphis doubled the score in the 55th minute as Phillip Goodrum won a duel that fell to the feet of Laurent Kissiedouat midfield. From there, Kissiedou carried the ball through the defense all the way to the box and used a left footed strike to beat the keeper.
Two quick goals from the Toros in the 73rd and 80th minutes even the score as 901 FC scrambled to regain the lead, but Rio Grande Valley held off the pressure in the final 10 minutes.
Memphis 901 FC will work for the first 20-win season in club history with two matches remaining in the regular season, withtheir final home regular season match against New York Red Bulls IIon Sunday, October 9 at3 p.m.
