Memphis 901 FC News Release
MEMPHIS, Tennessee - Memphis 901 FC has acquired forward Lagos Kunga on loan from Atlanta United, the club announced Monday afternoon.
Kunga, a pacey forward with skill, joins 901 FC's attack and will remain with on loan with the club for the remainder of the 2019 season.
"Lagos is a different type of player for us," 901 FC head coach Tim Mulqueen said Monday. "He has tremendous speed and is very shifty. He's someone I've known for a long time with the youth national team so when he became available, he was the perfect fit for us."
Kunga, 20, is an MLS Homegrown Player signing for defending MLS Champion Atlanta United. Born in Luanda, Angola, Kunga was raised in Atlanta working his way through the Atlanta United Academy, where he scored 10 goals in 21 appearances for United's U-18's.
He briefly played on loan with Atlanta's then-affiliate the Charleston Battery in 2017 before his Homegrown Player status went into effect with Atlanta United. Kunga's spent 2018 with Atlanta United 2, scoring three goals and recording two assists in the club's inaugural season.
Internationally, Kunga played for the U.S. U-20 National Team at the 2017 FIFA U-20 World Cup in South Korea. He made four appearances during the tournament and scored the sixth and final goal against New Zealand in a 6-0 victory which tied the USA's record for largest margin of victory at the FIFA U-20 World Cup.
"Lagos is a good, young winger," Sporting Director Andrew Bell said. "He's got decent pace and also an eye for goal, and we're very happy to welcome him to our group."
Kunga and his new teammates are back in action Wednesday for Memphis' Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup match against New York Red Bulls U-23 at AutoZone Park.
Tickets for that match are now available.
Single match tickets, flex plans and full season tickets are also available for purchase.
