Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings News Release

HARLINGEN - Jorge Mejia's pinch-hit, two-run double in the bottom of the eighth inning capped a four-run rally and the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings went on to post a thrilling 7-5 victory over the San Angelo Colts Sunday night at Harlingen Field.

Down 5-3 in the bottom of the eighth, the WhiteWings rallied for four runs on five hits. Abigail Sandoval doubled with one out, and came home on a double to center by Antoin Gray. San Angelo starter Stephen Artz was then relieved by Jacoby Marshall, who struck out first baseman Dimerson Nunez. With two outs, James Beever was brought in to face pinch-hitter Jordan Szabo. Szabo singled in Gray to tie the game at 5-5.

RGV manager Eddie Dennis then rolled the dice and brought in Mejia to pinch-hit for Scott Jay. Mejia promptly slammed a double to deep center, plating both Casey Clary, who had also doubled, and Szabo. In all, the WhiteWings had four doubles in the inning. Closer Adam Clay came on to pitch a perfect ninth inning to post his fourth save of the season.

WhiteWings starter A. J. Bozenhard lasted four innings, allowing two earned runs on four hits. He struck out one and walked none. Reliever Nibaldo Acosta pitched three innings and allowed five hits and three earned runs. Catcher-turned-pitcher Denys Lantigua (1-0) pitched the eighth and ended up earning the victory for Rio Grande Valley.

The Wings (9-15) scored three runs in the sixth inning, as Carlos Mendoza scored on a wild pitch, Sandoval had an RBI single and Nunez an RBI double. In all, the WhiteWings had 10 hits, including six doubles. San Angelo (14-10) also had 10 hits and left seven runners on base, while RGV left five runners on.

Rio Grande Valley now heads out on a 12-game, 14-day road trip, starting Tuesday in Amarillo. Subsequent stops include San Angelo, Laredo and Amarillo again. The Wings return home Monday, June 26, for a 7:05 p.m. game against Edinburg.
