Pawtucket Red Sox News Release
Here's a look at your Projected PawSox Pitching Staff:
RHP JAMIE BROWN
Jamie was one of Pawtucket's most effective pitchers after joining the organization midway through last season in a trade from Cleveland. In 18 games for the PawSox (15 in relief) he went 4-1 with a 2.26 ERA along with just 5 walks in 51.2 innings. He began the season with IL North rival Buffalo going 4-4 with a 3.52 ERA in 13 games (10 starts).
RHP FRANK CASTILLO
Frank is a familiar name to Red Sox fans as he returns to the organization less than a year after being released by Boston on March 26, 2003. He spent the bulk of last season with Sacramento (AAA-Oakland) of the PCL where he went 5-4 with a 4.13 ERA in 19 games (16 starts). He was released in July and finished the year with the Richmond Braves going 0-1 with a 1.50 ERA in 4 games. Castilllo went 10-9 with a 4.21 ERA in 26 starts for Boston in 2001. He also made two rehab starts for the PawSox that August.
RHP JOSH STEVENS
Josh tied for the Portland team-high in victories last season (with RHP Tim Kester) going 10-9 with a 3.85 ERA in 25 games (24 starts) for the Sea Dogs. It marked the first time in his pro career that he had been used as a starter. At the end of June he was 9-4 with a 3.05 ERA and thus was chosen to play in the Eastern League All-Star Game. He finished the year ranked 10th in the Red Sox system in ERA and tied for 2nd in wins.
LHP PHIL SEIBEL
Seibel, a former standout at the University of Texas, is 27-23 with a 4.06 ERA in 85 games (68 starts) in his three minor league seasons. He spent the past two seasons in the New York Mets system after being traded from Montreal (along with pitcher Scott Strickland) for former PawSox pitchers Bruce Chen and Dicky Gonzalez (and two minor league players) back on April 5, 2002. Seibel was 5-5 with a 3.59 ERA in 17 starts for Binghamton (AA) last year before a promotion to Norfolk (AAA) where he was 2-3, 6.03 in 11 games for the Tides. He posted 10 victories in each of his first two seasons.
LHP ED YARNALL
Ed was a top prospect in the Yankees' system and pitched for New York in both 1999 and 2000. In 1999 with Columbus he went 13-4 with a 3.47 ERA in 23 starts to finish 1st in the IL in ERA, 2nd in wins, and 3rd in strikeouts (146). He made his Major League debut with the Yankees later in 1999. Yarnall has been a part of three major trades since being drafted by the Mets in 1996 (out of LSU). In 1998 he was traded by the Mets, along with Preston Wilson, to Florida for Mike Piazza. In 1999 he was dealt from the Marlins, along with two minor league pitchers, to the Yankees for 3B Mike Lowell. And in July of 2000 he was sent to the Reds along with 3B Drew Henson and others while LHP Denny Neagle came to the Yanks. The 6'3", 235 lbs. southpaw pitched in Japan in both 2001 & 2002. He was with Sacramento (AAA-Oakland) in 2003 and was the winning pitcher in Game 3 of the PCL Finals to give the River Cats the title.
