Medina's Big Night Fuels Vermont Past Keene, 12-9

Montpelier, VT - Ronald Medina (Bronx, NY/ Keystone) had a huge night Friday, going 4-4 with 5 RBI's, helping Vermont keep their playoff hopes alive with a 12-9 win over Keene.

The game wouldn't start off Vermont's way, as Keene would score five in the second and one in the third, giving Keene a 6-2 lead after four innings. It was in fourth that Vermont would start their comeback. Jar Parker (Dallas, TX/ Arkansas Pine Bluff) and Paul Witt (Harper's Ferry, WV/ VCU) would both reach via singles, and Parker would score on an RBI single by Nate Grys (Sterling Heights, MI/ Western Michigan). Medina would come up and double into left center, scoring both runs, cutting Keene's lead to one.

Vermont would make their move past Keene in the bottom of the sixth, scoring five runs to take a 10-6 lead. The big blow that inning was a pinch hit, bases clearing triple by pinch hitter Brett Malm (Medford, NY/ Adelphi) in his first at bat in five games. He would come around to score on a triple from Parker, his third hit of the day.

Vermont would add their last two runs in the bottom of the seventh on a 2 run home run from Medina, his second of the year, pushing the lead to 12-7. Keene would add two in the ninth, but could not complete the comeback, dropping the contest 12-9.

Mark Connor (St. Albans, VT/ Clarkson) only lasted one and a third innings for Vermont, but did not receive a decision. The win went to Zach Lutner (Sicklermore, NJ/ Villanova), who threw a scoreless inning out the pen. The save went to Ryan Leckich (Port Neches, TX/ Baylor), who threw three innings after Lutner. He did surrender three runs on four hits but was able to bear down and get all nine outs for his fourth save of the year. The loss for Keene went to Andrew Houde (Newport, NH/ Keene State), who threw one inning, giving up five runs on four hits.

Vermont (15-21) gains a game up on Keene (21-15) and Sanford (20-14), who both dropped their games on Friday night. They now sit six games back of both teams, and 10 games back of first place Valley (25-11). Vermont returns to action Saturday night at Recreation Field as they host the Newport Gulls (18-17). First pitch is scheduled for 6:30, and can be heard on CBS Sports 1240 WSKI, or online via the NECBL Broadcast Network.
