Five-Run Sixth Costs SwampBats in 12-9 Loss

MONTPELIER, V.T.- A five run bottom of the sixth inning proved to be the difference at Recreation Field, as the Keene SwampBats (21-15) fell to the Vermont Mountaineers (15-21) by a score of 12-9 on Saturday night in Montpelier.

In the afore-mentioned sixth, Ronald Medina (Keystone) tied the game at six apiece with an RBI double to score Nate Grys (Western Michigan) before a walk and a single loaded the bases and pinch-hitter Brett Malm (Adelphi) cleared the bases with a two-out triple to give the hosts the lead for good at 9-6.

RHP Andrew Houde (Keene State) gave up the five runs on four hits while walking two in the inning and was dealt the loss for Keene, dropping to 3-1.

RHP Zach Lutner (Villanova-1.0 IP, H, BB, 2 K) got the win for Vermont to even his record at 1-1, while LHP Ryan Leckich (Baylor-3.0 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 2 K) tossed the final three innings to notch his third save.

Lorenzo Hampton (FIU) belted a two-run shot to left field in the top of the second inning to open the scoring and RBI singles by Jacob Koos (Stetson) and Brandon Smith (Dayton) in that same inning gave the SwampBats a 5-0 lead.

The Mountaineers scored two runs in the home half of the frame including an RBI single from Trae Hall (Motlow State CC) to cut the lead to 5-2.

Cordell Dunn Jr (Grayson College) launched a homerun to left his fifth on the summer which gave the SwampBats a 6-2 lead in the top of the third inning.

Vermont cut the lead to 6-5 with three two-out runs in the fourth including a two-run double from Medina.

SwampBats starter Jake McLinskey (Kennesaw State) surrendered five runs (three earned) on seven hits to go along with a walk and four strikeouts over 4.0 IP in a no-decision.

Vermont starter Mark Connor (Clarkson) gave up five runs on four hits while walking one in 1.1 IP.

Hampton's solo blast in the top of the seventh brought Keene within three at 10-7. The home run was Hampton's fourth of the summer.

The SwampBats cut the lead to 12-9 with a pair of runs in the ninth on an RBI double from Mitchell Golden (Georgia Southern) and an RBI single from Koos.

Alex Carballo (Kennesaw State-2-5, SB), Golden (3-3, 2 2B, RBI, SB, 2 R), Hampton (3-4, 2 HR, 3 RBI, 2 R) and Koos (2-5, 2 RBI, R) had multi-hit games for manager Lyndon Coleman's squad.

RHP Victor Danza (Lynn-1.0 IP, H, BB, K) had a scoreless outing in relief in his SwampBats debut.
