St. Paul Saints News Release

LINCOLN, NE - All it took to shut down the Lincoln Saltdogs offense was the sixth best pitcher in the league. Eddie Medina, who entered Wednesday with a 2.73 ERA, tossed a gem in game two of the doubleheader on Wednesday night at Haymarket Park. He threw his second ever complete game shutout, tossing a three-hitter and JJ Gould collected a career high four RBI as the Saints took down the Saltdogs 6-0. The win improved the Saints to 19-12 on the season.

Medina gave up just three singles, a leadoff single to Cesar Valera in the first, a two out two-out single in the second to Randolph Oduber, and a one out single to Brandon Jacobs in the sixth. He walked two and struck out one. He allowed two base runners to reach in just two innings, the second and the sixth, but never allowed a runner to reach as far as third. Medina threw 87 pitches, 55 for strikes. The complete game shutout was just the second of his career, a five-hit shutout with Brownsville of the United Baseball League in 2014 being the other.

The Saints got Medina all the run support he needed in the second when Brady Shoemaker led off with a single to center. With one out Dante Bichette Jr., who had his 11-game hit streak snapped in game one, singled to right sending Shoemaker to second. Dan Johnson's pop up dropped just out of the reach of a sliding Brandon Jacobs in left to load the bases. That's when Gould struck with a bases clearing triple to right-center just out of the reach of the outstretched arm of Randolph Oduber to make it 3-0.

In the fourth Jake Smith roped a double to right-center. He has hit safely in all four games he's played for the Saints. Gould came through again with an RBI single to center making it 4-0. Gould went 2-3 with a triple and four RBI.

In the fifth the Saints tacked on two insurance runs as Max Murphy reached on a one out single to right-center. He finished the night 3-4 with a run scored. Shoemaker then launched one off the wall in right-center scoring Murphy to make it 5-0. With Shoemaker at second, Bichette Jr. knocked him home with a single to left.

The Saints return home for a four-game series against the Winnipeg Goldeyes beginning on Thursday night at CHS Field at 7:05 p.m. The Saints send RHP Jake Esch (3-1, 5.87) against Goldeyes RHP Alex Boshers (1-3, 3.68). It is National Yoga Night. The game can be seen on the Saints Cable Network, cable access channels in and around the Twin Cities area, and heard on Alt 93.3 FM.
