Oshawa Generals News Release
Oshawa, Ontario - It was a packed house at the General Motors Centre on Sunday, as the 5,915 in attendance were treated to a fierce battle between the Oshawa Generals and the rival Kingston Frontenacs. Oshawa jumped to a quick 2-0 lead before both teams traded goals in the second to make the score 3-1. With time winding down and Kingston cutting the lead to 3-2, Boone Jenner put the game on ice with an empty-netter, finalizing the score at 4-2. Daniel Altshuller was tremendous in net, making 22 saves for his league leading 34th win. Scott Laughton recorded 3 assists in the win.
The first period was all Oshawa, as they were simply dominant in the first 20 minutes, beating Frontenac players to the puck and laying some big hits to get the crowd going.
The Generals jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead after goals from Bradley Latour and Lucas Lessio. Latour capitalized on a rebound chance after the three Generals forwards crashed the net, while Lessio's was scored on give-and-go with Cole Cassels. After crossing the blueline, Lessio dropped for Cassels who quickly dished the puck back to Lessio. The Oshawa sniper fired the puck into the back of the net, beating an out of position Mike Morrison.
Both teams struck in the second pushing the score to a 3-1 lead for the Generals.
At 1:53, on a powerplay chance for the Frontenacs, Sam Bennett cut in front of the Generals net before roofing over the shoulder of Daniel Altshuller, cutting the lead to 2-1. Oshawa resumed where they left off in the first as they began to take over the game with their physical play. Several big hits were dished out by the line of Biggs, Jenner, and Dal Colle and the Generals offence responded with 17 shots in the period.
With 0:07 seconds left in the second, Matt Petgrave scored his 10th of the season to give the Generals a 3-1 lead. As a crowd was developing in front of the Kingston net, Petgrave jumped into the play as the loose puck found its way on to his stick. The overage defenseman wasted no time as he threw the puck into the top right corner of the net beating Morrison's glove, and brought the GMC crowd to their feet.
Kingston forward Spencer Watson cut the lead to 3-2 late in the third, giving the Frontenacs the momentum, but Boone Jenner ensured the victory as he scored on the empty net to give the Generals the 4-2 victory.
Shots finished with the Generals outshooting the Frontenacs 38-24.
Bradley Latour (1G, 1A), Scott Laughton (3 Assists), and Lucas Lessio (1 Goal) swept the stars for Oshawa.
The Generals travel to Kingston on Friday, March 8th for a rematch of Sunday's game before travelling to Brampton, Belleville and Ottawa to wrap up the road schedule. The Generals return to the General Motors Centre on Sunday, March 17th as they host the Sudbury Wolves for the final game of the regular season. Puck drop is at 6:05pm.
