HAMILTON, ONTARIO. Riding off the high of clinching the East Division Championship from their win against the Otters on Friday night, the Bulldogs set to potentially preview the first round of the OHL playoffs on Sunday against the Peterborough Petes.
Avery Hayes broke the ice in the opening frame while on an early power-play for his 38th of the season by dancing through 2 of the Petes players and rifling a shot from the right circle off a drop pass from Logan Morrison with Nathan Staios adding the secondary at 4:45. Just passed the halfway point of the first, the Bulldogs went back to the power-play and played tic-tac-goal in the Petes end finishing off with the final pass from Staios to Mason McTavish in the right circle who one-timed the perfect pass past Peterborough's Tye Austin at 12:08 to give the Bulldogs a 2-0 lead. The pair of first period assists from Staios gave him the single season record for assists by a Bulldogs defenseman at 46. After 20 minutes the Bulldogs held the 2-0 advantage heading to the intermission.
Two minutes into the second period Arber Xhekaj started at the redline and made his way through the Petes backend to put one past Tye Austin from the bottom of the left circle to score his 12th of the season and push the lead to 3-0. After the Bulldogs third goal, tensions began to rise leaving both teams to call upon special team units. At 10:55 Lawson Sherk scored his 11th of the season from a Gavin White shot to make it 4-0 on a tip right in front of the Petes goal. George Diaco then followed up and scored his 22nd of the season with a top shelf shot to extend the lead to 5-0 off a Jan Mysak drop pass with Jorian Donovan collecting the secondary at 14:09. Marco Costantini held strong in the Bulldogs goal, every Petes shot aside through 40 giving the Bulldogs a 5-0 lead into the third period.
Five became six to open the final frame as Ryan Humphrey scored his 19th of the season with tip in front of the net at 7:02 after Ryan Winterton took a hard hit to get the puck to McTavish, feeding to Humphrey on the doorstep in the mini 2-on-1. With thoughts of a potential playoff series in mind tempers and tensions ran high through the middle part of the period with a parade to the penalty box on both sides, even seeing Arber Xhekaj & Donovan McCoy given 10- minute misconducts on separate plays. Costantini held the Hamilton door shut until the clock ticked down to 30 seconds to go, with the Petes on a late power-play, Hamilton product Justin DeZoete was able to bang a rebound past the OHL Goaltender of the Month for March to make it 6-1 but that's as much offense as the Petes would muster with Costantini making 27 total saves for the Sunday afternoon victory.
The Hamilton Bulldogs are headed down to Ottawa Friday night to face off against the 67s at 7:00 p.m. at TD Place to start off the 3-game road trip.
