Rockford RiverHawks News Release

O'FALLON, Mo. - Mike McTamney struck out eight in eight walk-free innings and three RiverHawks hit home runs on Saturday as Rockford beat River City, 7-2.

Jono Brooks, Brad Dutton and Tony Gonzalez homered as the RiverHawks ended a four-game losing streak. Rockford remained two games behind Traverse City and Gateway in the race for the last of four Frontier League playoff spots. The Beach Bums won, 10-7, at Florence and the Grizzlies were 3-2 winners at Windy City.

Rockford never trailed. Brooks hit a two-run homer, his ninth of the year and his second of the series, in the top of the first inning. River City scored a run in the fourth and tied the game in the fifth on a sacrifice squeeze bunt by Greg Stone.

The RiverHawks scored three times in the seventh inning to take a 5-2 lead. Dutton led off with a home run to left-center field. After Brandon Cohen singled and advanced to second base on a wild pitch, Gonzalez hit a two-run homer to drive River City starter Chris Clem (6-7) from the game.

McTamney (2-1) matched his career high with the eight-strikeout performance. His outing was the first time in 80 games this season that a Rockford starter lasted at least five innings and did not allow a walk.

The rubber match of the three-game series is scheduled for 6:05 p.m. Sunday.

The RiverHawks are members of the Frontier League, a 12-team independent professional baseball league in its 16th season.
