River City Rascals News Release
O'Fallon, MO-The River City Rascals answered the three home runs they gave Saturday night against the Rockford RiverHawks with three of their own including a grand slam by Chris Raniere to take the win 8-4.
Danny Powers (7-5) returned after an eight day rest to make the start for River City. The right-hander struck out a career best 12 batters, pitching his longest outing of the season, 8 2/3 innings.
"This was definitely my longest outing as a professional," Powers said. "I hit a little bump in the fifth inning but overall I was happy with the performance."
The Rascals got their first run off a Ryan Wehrle solo shot in the bottom of the second inning to take a 1-0 lead.
Rockford tied the game at one in the next half inning with a Jason James RBI double.
The Rascals big inning came in the third when they put up five runs giving them a striding lead against the RiverHawks. With the bases loaded and one away, Wehrle hit a base knock that plated Luke Barganier for a run. One out later, with the bases still full, Raniere unloaded on a pitch from Rockford reliever Peden Rucker for a grand slam into the left field bleachers. The home run was the sixth of the season for Raniere, and the Rascals left the inning leading 6-1.
Rockford made a try for the lead in the fifth inning when they added three runs with the help of six straight base hits, shortening the Rascal lead to 6-4.
The Rascals added a run in the bottom of the fifth, and got even more insurance when Dan Maycock homered in the bottom of the sixth to bring the Rascals lead to 8-4.
Powers left the game in the ninth inning with the bases loaded, just one out shy of his first complete game of the season. Brain Logan was called upon and struck out the all-star James for the final out and collected his first save of the season.
Flattery (2-4) took the loss for the RiverHawks in his first appearance against the Rascals this season. Powers (7-5) picked up his team leading seventh win.
The Rascals (39-42) begin a six game road trip Tuesday, where they will face off against the Traverse City Beach Bums and the Kalamazoo Kings in a final surge for a wildcard spot. The River City Rascals will return home to face the Gateway Grizzlies on August 26 at T.R. Hughes Ballpark. The series will be the final home series for the Rascals in the 2008 season.
