Modesto Nuts News Release
STOCKTON, CA. - One big inning was plenty for Ian McKinney who pitched the Modesto Nuts to a 5-1 win against the Stockton Ports on Tuesday night in the first of three games at Banner Island Ballpark.
The Nuts' (48-61; 18-21) offense did all of their damage against Mitchell Jordan (L, 8-7) in a five-run fourth inning. Jarred Kelenic and Joe Rizzo each singled to start the inning. After Jake Scheiner walked, Keegan McGovern singled home two runs. Connor Kopach followed that up with a sac fly. Nick Thurman drove home a run with a single as part of a two-hit day. On Thurman's single, he was caught in a rundown between first and second when the throw home was cut off. While Thurman was avoiding a tag, Ariel Sandoval scored the fifth and final run.
Meanwhile, Ian McKinney (W, 9-5) dominated the Ports (51-56; 18-21). The lefty retired the first 16 he faced with nine strikeouts. His perfect game bid was broken up in the sixth when Robert Mullen homered. McKinney retired the last nine batters he faced and struck out a total of 12 batters with no walks.
The Nuts go for a series victory in game two of the three-game series with the Ports. First pitch in Stockton at 7:10 p.m. Coverage on ModestoNuts.com will start at 7:00 p.m. Listen live online on your phone, tablet or PC.
