McGill's Big Day Leads Vermont Past Winnipesaukee, 7-3

LACONIA, NH- Liam McGill (Wakefield, RI/ Columbia) had a huge night for the Mountaineers, going 3-4 with 2 homeruns and 6 RBI's, as Vermont cruised past Winnipesaukee, 7-3.

In the bottom of the second, McGill got the Mountaineers on the board with a three run homerun to left center, giving the Mountaineers a 3-0 lead early. He added a solo shot in the top of the fourth, his second of the day, giving Vermont a 4-1 lead.

The Muskrats would close the game in the bottom of the 6th, following a two run homerun off the bat of Steven Passatempo (Medford, MA/ UMass Lowell), a long homerun to left center, closing Vermont's lead to one.

McGill would get those two runs back in the top of the eighth. With two runners on, he singled to center, giving Vermont a 6-3 lead.

Nate Grys (Sterling Heights, MI/ Western Michigan) gave the Mountaineers an insurance run in the top of the ninth, his third homerun of the season, tying him with Straton Podaras (Glen Head, NY/ Radford) for the team lead.

John Cain (Middletown, NY/ Manhattan) looked sharp for this first appearance of the year, going six strong innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits, while striking out five. Indigo Diaz (North Vancouver, BC/ Michigan State) threw two solid innings in relief, recording his first save of the year.

Vermont (4-9) heads back home Friday to take on Mystic (7-7) at Recreation Field in Montpelier. The Mountaineers trail the first place Valley Blue Sox (9-3) by five and a half games. First pitch on Friday is scheduled for 6:30, and can be heard on CBS Sports 1240-AM WSKI or online via The NECBL Broadcast Network.
