Newport Gulls News Release
NEWPORT, R.I. -The Gulls defeated the Danbury Westerners for the second time this week in a 6 - 5 game decided on a walk-off single by Arizona State's Zach Hogueisson. Tyler Mattison started and pitched a strong outing going five innings and allowing three runs, two of which were earned, but did not factor into the decision. Austin Mihlbauer and Nathan Wrighter had strong outings as well with Mihlbauer tossing two scoreless innings in relief and Wrighter picking up the win with a scoreless ninth. The Bryant Bulldog has yet to give up a run on the year.
Newport took its first lead of the game on a Cole Austin homerun to left field scoring himself and Jack Gethings. The Danbury Westerners struck back in the top of the second scoring three runs on singles by Chris Kanios and Randy Tavares as well as a sacrifice fly by Sean Buckhout. The game would remain 3 - 2 until the bottom of the fourth when Dillon Plew singled to score Zach Hogueisson. The Gulls would score again in the fifth on a homerun by Dalton Reed to take a 4 - 3 lead.
Newport's advantage would not last long, however, as in the top of the sixth Daniel Franchi singled to score Spencer Harbert. Danbury would score again in the seventh after Spencer Harbert singled to bring in Drew Frederic, making it 5 - 4. There was no further scoring in the game until the bottom of the ninth when Zach Britton led off the inning with a double off the right-field wall, setting the plate for the Arizona State teammates to finish the deal. Cole Austin hit a wall scraping double to bring in Britton to tie the ball game. Danbury then managed to get Dalton Reed out on strikes and before intentionally walking Stevie Mangrum to bring up Zach Hogueisson who singled to left plating Jack Gethings for the win.
The Gulls improved to 8- 5 while the Danbury Westerners fell to 7- 7. Newport will take on the Ocean State Waves (8- 5) tomorrow on the road starting at 6:30 p.m. in a battle for sole possession of first place in the Southern Division before returning to Cardines Field to host the Winnipesaukee Muskrats (3-10) on Friday night.
