Victoria Seals News Release

Chico, CA - Looking to take two of three games from the Chico Outlaws on the road, the Victoria Seals returned to Nettleton Stadium for the series finale on Saturday night. Giving Jino Gonzalez (1-4) his ninth start of the season, the Seals matched up against Chico's Wayne Franklin (3-1) in game three.

For a third consecutive night strong pitching was the early story in Northern California heat, with both starters overcoming shaky starts to send the game into the third inning scoreless. In the top of the third frame, Victoria would take the lead when a solo home run from Terrence McClain, his eighth of the season, put the Seals up 1-0.

Doubling their advantage in the fifth frame, the Seals picked up another long ball off the bat of McClain to stake a 2-0 lead against the Outlaws. Chico would bounce back with a solo home run of their own, however, when lead-off batter John Urick took Victoria reliever Jeff Duda deep to pull the home side within one in the bottom of the eighth inning.

After Brandon Villafuerte stepped in to strand a pair of Outlaws in that same frame, the Victoria closer returned to the mound in the ninth and promptly retired the side to collect his ninth save of the season and secure a 2-1 Seals victory.

Jino Gonzalez earned his second win of the year with seven shutout innings on the mound, while Wayne Franklin took the loss for Chico. Terrence McClain's two home runs pushed his season total to nine and evened the Seals second-half record at 1-1, while John Urick's pinch-hit home run proved to be the lone offensive highlight for the Outlaws.

The Seals will now travel to St. George, Utah ahead of the three-game series against their former manager Darrell Evans beginning Monday night. Game time is slated for 6:05 p.m. (PT) from Bruce Hurst Field. The contest will not be broadcast on the Victoria Seals Radio Network, but will fans can still follow the action online via www.victoriaseals.ca.
