Maui, HI - The Tucson Toros were shutout by Maui Na Koa Ikaika 6-0 on Saturday. The loss was the third time The Toros have been shutout by Maui this season.
Maui struck early by taking a 2-0 lead in the first inning but were held scoreless afterwards by Tucson until the 8th frame. Maui would add to their lead by scoring 4 runs, including a 2 run homer by catcher A. Asher, his first of the year.
The Toros struggled at the plate and combined for only 4 hits on the night. Tucson's first hit didn't come until the 4th inning with a single by SS Jose Valdez. The Toros left a total of 8 runners on base all night. Toros 1B Cristobal Santana reached base for the third straight night with a single in the 6th inning.
The International All-Star Game starter Wes Ethridge returned to true form in his first start since giving up 3 earned runs in the All-Star Game in Tucson. Etheridge nabbed his 4th win of the season to improve to 4-0 after going 7 innings allowing 4 hits, 1 walk and fanning 7 to lower his ERA to 0.78. Tucson Starter Cody Walden received his first loss of the season despite a solid performance. The lefty allowed 2 runs (1 earned) on 5 hits in 6 innings, while striking out 5. Reliever Cibney Bello struck out 4 in 2 innings of work, but was roughed up for 5 hits and Maui's final 4 earned runs.
The Tucson Toros will face the Na Koa Ikaika in Maui on Sunday for game four of a six game series. First pitch is scheduled for 9:35 p.m. Tucson time.
