MBFC Agrees to New Deal with Rafa Baca
January 10, 2024 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Monterey Bay FC News Release
SEASIDE, California - Monterey Bay Football Club (Monterey Bay F.C.) announced today that the club has agreed to terms with Rafael Baca on a new two-year contract, pending league and federation approval. After signing with Monterey Bay this past July in a move away from Liga MX side Cruz Azul, Baca and the Club began negotiations on a new deal following the conclusion of the 2023 season. With both sides agreed, the move now officially returns a key cog in the midfield for the Union ahead of the upcoming USL Championship campaign.
"I'm grateful for the new opportunity given to me by Monterey Bay Football Club and all of the staff," said Baca. "Personally, I will prepare to the best of my capabilities to bring lots of joy to the fans. The main aspiration that I have for this season is to achieve one of the franchise's main goals - a playoff run. Alongside my teammates, I also aspire to work hard to deliver quality performances for the fans. I'm a strong believer that with the positive results you gain, comes the confidence of the fans. And with the confidence of the fans, you have an incredible atmosphere without a single empty seat. Full circle, an atmosphere like that leads to positive results. Vamos Monterey Bay!"
Baca made his debut for the Crisp-and-Kelp on August 5 at Cardinale Stadium against Sacramento Republic FC. The following month at home against Las Vegas Lights FC, Baca scored his first goal for Monterey Bay - a late game-winner - to put the finishing touches on an exciting, come-from-behind 3-2 victory in Seaside on September 16. Overall, Baca played over 1,000 minutes for the Union across 12 appearances (all starts) and added 24 tackles, 11 interceptions, 11 chances created, one goal, and one assist.
"It's great to continue with Rafa at our Club," said Monterey Bay F.C. Sporting Director and Head Coach Frank Yallop. "He is really experienced and played well after joining us late last season. He is a calming influence in the midfield and our young players look up to him. Rafa is important to this team, not just for the good work he does on the field but for the work he does off the field. He is well respected in the locker room and brings much experience and leadership. He also enjoys connecting with the community and fans. We are excited to have him on our team and at our club for the next two years."
After nearly a decade in Liga MX, Baca reunited with Yallop, Ramiro Corrales and Simon Dawkins in a midseason move to Seaside last season. In 2011, Baca signed his first professional contract with local Major League Soccer side San Jose Earthquakes under then-manager Yallop and joined a side that included Dawkins and team captain Corrales. Three years later, Baca made the move to Mexico's topflight to play for Cruz Azul. By 2016, Baca was starting every match for Cruz Azul as a midfield mainstay. He helped lead Cruz Azul to several honors, including winning the Copa MX: Apertura in 2018, both the Supercopa MX and Leagues Cup in 2019, Liga MX: Guardianes in 2021, and Supercopa de la Liga MX in both 2021 and 2022. In total, the Tuxpan, Michoacán native played over 22,700 minutes across 311 matches for the side, adding nine goals and eight assists for La Máquina.
The current roster heading into the 2024 season as of January 10 is listed alphabetically as follows:
Goalkeepers (2): Carlos Herrera, Antony Siaha
Defenders (7): Morey Doner, Max Glasser, Kai Greene, Carlos Guzmán, Alex Lara, Walmer Martínez, Grant Robinson
Midfielders (5): Rafa Baca, Simon Dawkins, Mobi Fehr, Xavi Gnaulati, Adrian Rebollar
