Fresno Grizzlies News Release
FRESNO, CA - Fresno Mayor Ashley Swearengin will officially open the 2009 Fresno Grizzlies season at Chukchansi Park when she throws out the ceremonial first pitch on Opening Day, presented by Red Zone Sports Grill. The Grizzlies kick off the 2009 season, with the help of the Mayor, when they welcome the Portland Beavers to Downtown Fresno on Thursday, April 9th.
"The entire Central Valley is excited to open a new season of Pacific Coast League baseball action in Downtown Fresno this Thursday, and we're honored that Mayor Swearengin will join us to kick off another summer of 'Fun. Guaranteed,'" said Grizzlies Executive Vice President and General Manager Andrew Stuebner.
A resident of Fresno for more than 20 years, and a graduate of Fresno State, Ashley Swearengin was sworn in as mayor of California's fifth-largest city in January. She will take the field for a ceremonial first pitch on Thursday evening, continuing a long tradition that began in 1910 when President William H. Taft threw out the first ceremonial "first pitch" to Walter Johnson of the Washington Senators.
"Opening Day for the Grizzlies is always an exciting time in Fresno, and I'm honored to be a part of such an eagerly anticipated ceremony," Mayor Swearengin said. "I encourage people from throughout the Valley to come to Grizzlies' games all season long to experience great fun and great baseball.
"As part of the experience of attending a Grizzlies' game, I also encourage everyone to take some time to discover some new treats that have come to the downtown area since last season. Before and after the game, take the opportunity to visit the new terrific restaurants and other businesses near the stadium."
Mayor Ashley Swearengin and the Fresno Grizzlies open the 2009 campaign on Thursday, April 9th when they welcome the Portland Beavers to downtown Fresno for Opening Day, presented by Red Zone Sports Grill. Single-game tickets, season tickets or mini-plans are available now by visiting the new FresnoGrizzlies.com or calling the Grizzlies front office at 559.320.HITS.
