Mayers, Nazario Shut Down Mets as Cards Win 3-1

JUPITER, Fla. (April 23, 2014) - The Palm Beach Cardinals shut down the St. Lucie Mets en route to a 3-1 win Wednesday at Roger Dean Stadium.
Michael Mayers needed 96 pitches to get through six innings, but he limited the Mets to one run on four hits while striking out six.
Iden Nazario gave up one hit but faced the minimum over the final three innings to earn his second save.
The Cardinals broke a 1-1 tie in the fourth. With one out, Anthony Garcia singled off of Gabriel Ynoa. David Washington followed with an RBI triple to put the Cardinals up 2-1. Washington later came home on a ground out to make it 3-1.
Palm Beach scored the first run of the game on a ground ball out in the first. The Mets answered right back in the top of the second. Aderlin Rodriguez singled against Mayers and Gilbert Gomez doubled. Rodriguez came home from third on a sac fly by Albert Cordero to temporarily tie the game.
That would be all the scoring for the Mets, who entered the game at the top hitting team in the Florida State League.
Ynoa scattered eight hits in six innings in the loss. Paul Sewald pitched two scoreless innings of relief.
The Mets (11-8) and Cardinals (9-10) will complete their four-game series on Thursday at Roger Dean Stadium at 6:35 p.m. The Mets have won two of the first three games.
